Liverpool named University of the Year at Educate North Awards

The University of Liverpool has been awarded the prestigious title of University of the Year at the Educate North Awards.

The ceremony, hosted by Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh, saw the University’s Chief Operating Officer, Lucy Everest, accept the honour on behalf of the institution.

Judges praised the University’s impact, stating: “The University of Liverpool is one of the great beacons of knowledge, learning and enablement in the North and a global leader of international research and people development. It is a world leader in Health Sciences and a range of subjects stretching from the Arts through to Zoology.

“The University is in the top 3 leading research universities in the UK for recruiting students from state schools and areas where participation in higher education is low and has an extensive international presence with a range of university partnerships in Europe, China, India, Canada and North America.

“It has a long history of being inclusive, innovative and caring for all and is one of the few leading research universities to hold the Gold Standard in Teaching Award.”

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones added: “This is a huge honour for the University, and I’m delighted with this fantastic win.

“We are proud to have made important progress in all major international and domestic league tables over the last year and, indeed, we are the only Russell Group university to improve across all five. This, together with our strengths in education and experience, research and innovation, internationalisation, and economic impact really set us apart. Our success at these prestigious awards is testament to the incredible work by teams across the institution and I wish to extend a huge congratulations to them all.”

This accolade builds on a year of recognition for the University, which has enjoyed improvements in five major international and domestic league tables. The University’s latest rankings in the three major domestic league tables are the highest they have been at any point since 2000.

Judges particularly commended the University’s successes in widening participation. Entry 2024 was the University’s largest ever intake of students from the most socio-economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods, whilst our sector-leading work supporting care experienced students has seen this cohort double over the last four years.
