Manchester Met bioscience degree apprentice supports international apprenticeship development

We were pleased to welcome back, Dr James Mackay from Otago Polytechnic to Manchester Metropolitan University. James has been leading on the development and delivery of degree apprenticeships using Manchester Met’s delivery model in New Zealand.

During his visit, some of our inspiring apprentices including, Emily Butterworth, Laboratory Scientist (Bioscience) Degree Apprentice from AstraZeneca, were given the opportunity to share their own apprenticeship experiences and learn about James’ journey of launching degree apprenticeships in New Zealand.

Emily, Laboratory Scientist (Bioscience) Degree Apprentice said: "The event was thoroughly engaging and it was great to be able to learn about the value degree apprenticeships can bring in other countries. It was a privilege to meet Dr MacKay and share ideas and experiences with him, which made this a reciprocal learning process. Events like this are invaluable for degree apprentices and it is wonderful that Manchster Met can provide these opportunities for us."
 
James also met our Vice Chancellor, Professor Malcolm Press CBE as well as members of the apprenticeships team and our academics to discuss how impactful degree apprenticeships can be in addressing social mobility and bridging critical skills shortages, to build on implementing them in New Zealand.
