Terumo Aortic, a global medical device company, dedicated to developing solutions for aortic and peripheral vascular disease is investing in a new ‘Final Pack’ facility for its impressive Glasgow facility. The Renfrewshire-based site is responsible for the manufacture of vascular products that are used worldwide by surgeons and interventional radiologists to treat patients with aortic disease.
Industrial Technology Systems Ltd (ITS), a leading automation systems integrator in the life sciences sector, has been awarded a multi-million pound contract to design, build, install and validate a number of packaging lines for the new packaging facility, to increase productivity, efficiency and traceability, improve product quality and meet the Medical Device Regulations (MDR).
Murray MacInnes, Terumo Aortic Project Manager commented: “We are thrilled to announce the introduction of the New Final Packaging area at Terumo Aortic, Glasgow. This innovative solution will bring several key benefits to Terumo Aortic, including increased inspection speed and accuracy, enhanced production efficiency, and improved system productivity and availability. The complexity of Terumo Aortic’s product types, combined with our new product ranges, demonstrates ITS’ capabilities in developing solutions for the digital age. These new solutions will enable Terumo Aortic to manage and utilise packaging components more efficiently, while supporting the production of a wide range of products on both the semi-automated and manual lines. The New Final Pack Project team is excited to introduce these advancements and looks forward to the positive impact they will have on our operations”.
ITS, in partnership with HAHN Automation Group, is designing, installing and validating multiple packaging lines to handle over 2,400 complex product types. These lines will bring the first automated lines to the Renfrewshire-based site. By integrating advanced automation technologies including robotics, OCR/OCV vision systems, AI-driven vision systems, code readers, PLCs, SCADA, digitalisation, historian and cyber security, ITS is ensuring that Terumo Aortic Group will meet the increased production demands at the site.
Trina Ives, ITS’ Life Sciences Key Account Manager, shares her experience: “Collaborating with Terumo Aortic Group during the early stages of the tender process has been an incredible journey. We’ve developed innovative concepts, created prototypes and 3D simulations, introduced architectures and cutting-edge technologies, and recommended solutions to elevate the site’s packaging performance. Securing this strategic project is a milestone, and we’re excited to continue working closely with the Terumo Aortic Group’s team to bring these concepts to life”.
ITS will be suppling an automated line to handle Terumo Aortic most distributed products along with three additional manual packaging lines and a station to package Terumo Aortic’s complex endovascular products. These lines are specifically aimed at reducing takt times and increasing packaging throughput to meet the growing production demands.
ITS will be managing the entire contract, including, mechanical and electrical design, robotics and automation aspects. The control system for the lines will seamlessly integrate with the site’s MES, ensuring accurate data is applied to all products, which has been fully inspected and validated before being applied. The validated solution will accurately track the products through the processes and guarantee that the packaging processes comply with Medical Device Regulations (MDR). Robots will be used in the packing process, to increase accuracy and meet the speed requirements and takt times.
Andrew Mills, ITS’ CEO explains, "Our team at ITS is thrilled to have been awarded this multi-million pound contract. This project is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative, high-quality automation solutions that enhance productivity and efficiency, while ensuring compliance. We look forward to collaborating closely with our partners on this exciting venture and are confident that the packaging lines will significantly improve product quality and help meet the growing demands of Terumo Aortic Group."
The final pack investment will deliver several benefits to Terumo Aortic Group including increased inspection speed and accuracy, improved production efficiency and increased productivity and availability. The new solutions will enable Terumo Aortic Group to manage and utilise packaging components more efficiently, reduce takt times and will allow for a wide range of products to be processed on the packaging lines.
