Pedro Fernandez has joined the engineering firm as a Scientist, bringing expertise in microbiology research. He will initially lead the company’s Project PICASSO Research Lab, as well as other effluent treatment investigations and projects. Project PICASSO is a Phase 1 research and development project to help the RAF accelerate its journey to net zero. It centres around an effluent treatment system that uses bacteria to rapidly treat waste aviation fuel and capture carbon dioxide in a solid form that can be repurposed.
The project isn’t new to Mr Fernandez, as he previously supported the initiative as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Northumbria University. During this time, he focused on developing the scientific content, helping with the microbiology research and optimising operations in the laboratory. Mr Fernandez holds a PhD in Applied Sciences from Northumbria University, a Bachelor's in Biochemistry, and a Masters in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, both from the University of Murcia.
Speaking about his appointment, Mr Fernandez said: “I am delighted to be joining Northern Engineering Solutions. I immediately feel part of the team and hope my scientific knowledge and experience will help the business continue being at the forefront of innovation and research relating to effluent treatment.”
Northern Engineering Solutions specialises in mechanical, electrical and process engineering (MEP) solutions, focusing on high and ultra-high-purity process pipework, cleanrooms, and effluent treatment systems. Clients include Pragmatic, CPI, Sterling Pharma, and De La Rue.
Simon Taylor, Director of Northern Engineering Solutions, added: “We are delighted to welcome Pedro to the team. His appointment supports our growth strategy and enhances our capabilities to help clients now and in the future. He will also reinforce our ongoing collaborative relationship with Northumbria University.
“Pedro brings a wealth of research knowledge in Biology and Microbiology, which will expand our project scope. In conjunction with our engineering experience, his knowledge will help us explore new project opportunities, especially those in which we deploy biochemical solutions and treatment technologies. These solutions include working with industrial effluent, municipal wastewater, sludge, seawater, carbon capture and reuse.”
