Could you recruit an undergraduate placement student to your organisation? The University of Sheffield is keen to develop links with organisations who would be interested in recruiting placement students from the School of Biosciences, ranked 4th in the UK for research quality. Undergraduate courses cover the full breadth of biology, from molecular and cell biology, genetics, development, human physiology and pharmacology through to evolution, ecology, biodiversity conservation and sustainability and there is increasing interest in taking a placement year among students.

Why offer a placement?

Employing a placement student for a fixed-term role can be a great way to inject new ideas, skills and energy into your organisation or to complete a specific project. It can also help you create a talent pipeline for the future, enabling you to fill graduate roles ahead of the competition. Both students and employers are supported by the University throughout the fixed-term contract of employment. As well as promoting roles to our students, we can assist with recruitment and selection as appropriate to your organisation. You can read more about placements and how we can support you on our employer's pages or hear directly from some of our students and their employers here.

Requirements

The role should be at an appropriate level for a student in their penultimate year of study. A placement is a development opportunity and the student should receive regular feedback and be included in your professional development review processes. In addition, the placement should be:

  • Minimum 38 weeks, taken between the 2nd and 3rd years of study
  • Minimum 30 hours per week
  • Paid at the National Minimum Wage as a minimum
