Artificial intelligence report - life science companies leading the way in Europe and the US
Marks & Clerk recently released our 2022 annual report on artificial intelligence (AI) patent filing trends at the EPO. It provides some useful insights for the life and medical sciences sectors, which members of the BioNow community might find interesting. This year, among other trends, we have found:
- Whilst AI patent filings are still actively growing, the rate of this growth is slowing, a sign the market may now be maturing
- Life Sciences has remained the sector filing the most AI applications at the EPO
- For European companies, and to a slightly lesser extent US companies, Life Sciences is decisively the largest industry sector filing AI applications
- The number of EPO oppositions filed against patents has risen again in 2021, indicating more competition
- Computer vision technology has seen a growth in patent filings for the fifth consecutive year
- China is the third largest source of AI applications at the EPO, but Republic of Korea has the highest rate of AI applications per capita.
We are particularly proud that the data continues to show that M&C are the leading firm for AI applications in Europe – in 2021 we had a 75% allowance rate for all AI applications closed, which is 20% greater than the industry average of 55%.
