Peak Proteins is delighted to welcome Amy Clarke and Emily Jones who join us for a weeks’ placement experience.
Amy Clarke
Amy has recently graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) with a BSc in Chemistry and will be starting an Advanced Materials MSc at MMU in September. The MSc is a combination of Chemistry, Engineering and Business Studies.
Amy originally thought about becoming a pharmacist and has worked part-time at a Pharmacy Dispensary for the past 6 years. She became qualified by gaining her NVQ II in Pharmaceutical Sciences and BTEC in Pharmacy Service Skills during her gap year between High School and College.
“I decided not to pursue a career as a pharmacist and instead took Chemistry to degree level. I’m still exploring career options and came across Peak Proteins last year when I was investigating the businesses at Alderley Park. I really wanted to find out more about the potential roles available in industry”, commented Amy. Adding “The University tends to push graduate schemes in corporate companies, but Peak Proteins came across as an interesting team involved in some fascinating projects”.
Emily Jones
Emily has just finished her second year at the University of York studying an integrated Master’s degree in Natural Sciences specialising in Chemistry. She will continue with her third year next year and is looking forward to her final year in industry where she will be able to complete her Masters project whilst employed.
Emily’s degree enabled her to study biology, chemistry, the environment (and some archaeology). She has a particular interest in pharmaceutical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, and climate change. At University, Emily worked with Green Impact, the National Union of Students United Nations award-winning programme designed to support environmentally and socially sustainable practice.
Emily was introduced to a number of companies two years ago when she visited Alderley Park on a fact-finding mission to discover more about the many companies on the site and what they did. She also visited Peak Proteins.
Emily commented, “I was very interested in Peak Proteins 2 years ago. Particularly X-ray crystallisation and structural determination. During this visit it was great to find out how the scientists work with customers. Interaction with people is important to me and it’s good to know it can be an integral part of a scientist’s job”.
Dr Mark Abbott, Chief Executive Officer, commented, “Being able to give young scientists a taste of what it is like to work in non-corporate companies is helpful in giving them a broader perspective of possible career opportunities. For us being a scientist doesn’t just mean working in a laboratory. Our whole team are scientists and because we provide a bespoke service, this is vital to our understanding, and fulfilling our customers’ needs.”
