Peak Proteins welcomes Maria Camila Torres who joins the team as a Protein Scientist.
Camila recently graduated with a Master’s in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry from the University of York. While doing her degree, Camila found that she really enjoyed the practical work and the biochemistry and bioinorganic parts of her course. For her final year project, Camila worked in the York Structural Biology Laboratories to determine the structure of three Leishmania donovani bromodomains. Working in protein structure determination and performing inhibitor binding assays further cemented her love for laboratory work and introduced her to a world of protein science.
After completing her course, Camila wanted to stay in protein science and Peak Proteins seemed like the perfect place to do this. Camila commented, “I'm looking forward to learning how to manage different types of proteins and seeing their individual properties and forgetting as many organic reaction mechanisms as possible!”.
Dr Derek Ogg, Chief Scientific Officer and Protein Crystallographer, added, “We are really happy to have Camila join us as part of our growing Peak Proteins family. She has impressed us all with how quickly she has got up to speed with work in the lab and is already making significant contributions towards delivering projects to clients”.
Camila is working with Dr Steven Harborne and Dr Ravneet Mandair in the laboratory and is settling in well. Rav said, “We’re delighted to welcome Camila to the team. She has immersed herself into learning the staple techniques of protein science and has assisted on a few ongoing projects. We’re happy to see her getting up to speed rapidly and have no doubt she will continue to further her skill set as she becomes more independent”.
Camila was originally born in Colombia and her family moved to England when she was 5. In her free time Camila enjoys reading, sewing and yoga. She supports Everton Football Club.
