Dr Gill Westgate, Business Manager in the Centre for Skin Sciences and Chair of the Cosmetics Cluster UK (www.cosmeticsclusteruk.com), recently gave a presentation at the inaugural CHEM UK Expo in Harrogate to illustrate the size and scope of the cosmetics and beauty sector and highlight employment opportunities for those with a science qualification. Gill’s main messages were that the cosmetics and beauty sector is 4th biggest industry in the UK, with annual sales of £9.7billion and employing 200,000 with over 60% having a science based qualification. Gill also reported results from a recent CCUK survey that highlighted that there is a real need to promote this sector to students during further and higher education, as over 70% of those surveyed were not aware of career opportunities in the cosmetics industry whilst in education. The Centre for Skin Sciences launched a Masters in Skin Sciences 3 years ago and the University will offer cosmetics industry support to Chemistry students interested in careers in this sector from this year.
We would be very interested in talking to companies in the sector about how we can help you get the right graduates and support your skin sciences research innovations.
