Software Engineer – Computer Vision, Instrument Control & AI Inference

Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne (On-site)

Company: Invenirex Ltd

Salary: £38,796 | Contract: Fixed Term Contract until 31/08/2026

The Role

You’ll work directly with the Chief Software Engineer and cross-functional teams to design and implement real-time, AI-driven control systems. It’s a hands-on, technical role—perfect for someone who wants to write code that directly drives real-world instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control software for our custom hardware stack (cameras, actuators, LEDs, fluidics).

  • Implement computer vision models for droplet and nanoparticle detection.

  • Build and synchronise image acquisition pipelines for multi-channel CMOS sensors.

  • Deploy TorchScript/ONNX models for edge inference on embedded compute nodes.

  • Design APIs and UI layers for translating AI output into researcher-friendly results.

  • Take ownership of parts of the stack from device interface to data visualisation.

  • Support internal simulation/test tools for faster iteration cycles.

  • Work closely with hardware, optical, and assay teams to optimize end-to-end performance.

  • Contribute to architecture decisions and scalable design for future diagnostic products.

  • Maintain clear, testable, and documented code using Git-based workflows.

What We’re Looking For

  • BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or equivalent experience.

  • 1+ years of relevant experience (industry, academia, or self-driven projects).

  • Experience in C/C++ is essential.

  • Strong Python skills, especially with libraries such as OpenCV, NumPy, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.

  • Exposure to real-time camera feeds, image acquisition and synchronisation, and fluorescence imaging pipelines.

  • Familiarity with embedded systems, edge devices, or low-level control APIs.

  • Solid understanding of neural network inference formats, such as TorchScript and TFLite.

  • Methodical, systems-oriented, and obsessed with getting the details right.

  • Pragmatic, self-directed, and energised by building working systems over chasing elegant abstractions.

Why InvenireX?

  • Work at the bleeding edge of AI, fluorescence, and diagnostics.

  • Build tech that can reshape clinical and research workflows.

  • Small, elite team—your decisions directly shape product and architecture.

  • Collaborate with top-tier partners including CPI, Labman and QuantuMDx.

  • Ship code that does something real: it moves motors, counts molecules, and saves time, money—and lives.
