On 6
th November, the Bionow and Liverpool Life Sciences UTC Mentoring programme celebrated the completion of the course by its second cohort of year 12 students while introducing the next cohort to the scheme.
The event saw the school Principal, Jill Davies, present the successful mentees with their certificates, before the new intake of students were given the opportunity to take part in “mentor matching”, a series of three-minute meetings which enabled mentors and mentees to introduce themselves and get to know each other.
About the scheme
Now in its third year, the scheme identifies experienced industry experts from the Bionow membership who can support BTEC Applied Science students at the UTC to help them to identify potential career paths open to them and guide them through the challenges of their personal growth. Mentoring meetings take place monthly, with each meeting lasting for up to an hour, with enough time between meetings for the mentee to be able to work towards the goals set in their action plan.
In addition, students take part in company site visits and attend industry talks and conferences as part of their personal and professional development.
The BTEC students at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC represent a diverse range of cultural and economic backgrounds, with some being the first generation in their families to pursue higher education. The programme has played, and will continue to play, a vital role in supporting these talented individuals as they achieve their aspirations, whether progressing to university, securing apprenticeships, or embarking on careers in the sciences.
Bionow CEO, Geoff Davison, said: “
We are delighted to see another cohort complete the scheme and it was a pleasure to have them attend our BioInfect and Pharma Manufacturing events this year. More than 20 students have already been through the programme, with this year’s intake taking the number past 30. We welcome these new students to the programme and look forward to giving them the support and encouragement they need to further their personal and professional development.”
Liverpool Life Sciences UTC Principal, Jill Davies, commented: “
The mentoring programme we have with Bionow is priceless! It allows our students to network and build relationships with professionals doing the jobs the students are aiming for – this can never be replicated by teachers in the classroom. The programme allows our students to embody our vision of ‘every day is an interview’, conduct themselves as young professionals and realise their potential.”
