Many science companies are under-utilising the levy funds, according to a report by the National Audit Office (NAO). Infact, only 4% of companies are utilising their full fund. Because of this, science companies are severely under-represented among levy-paying employers. Instead of using these dedicated funds to invest in apprenticeship programs and their workforce, they are letting the funds stagnate where they end up back in the government treasury.
The under-utilisation of the apprenticeship levy by science companies has been a concern for the UK government as it is seen as a great way to improve skills and increase employee diversity in the sector.
At Tiro, we are working to engage and educate science companies to encourage them to use the levy funds more effectively. We provide targeted support and guidance on how to use these funds to support apprenticeships within their current teams.
Upskilling members of staff in science and manufacturing, using your apprenticeship levy, can be a cost-effective way for companies to invest in the development of their workforce.
This is increasingly useful for companies that have manufacturing units with Process Operators and Manufacturing Technicians.
Some concerns that companies may have involve their employee taking time out of work to attend lectures/college. With Tiro, that isn't the case. All of our learning in done online and our tutors visit the student at the work place. This gives the employee and the company greater flexibility to continue doing their vital role.
The levy provides a source of funding that can be used to support apprenticeship programs which are designed to give individuals the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in your company. It’s also a great way to show your staff that you care about their development and career progression, aiding to a more positive company outlook.
78% of the manufacturing companies we work with have said that they have seen an increase in work moral and productivity after investing in upskilling their employees through an apprenticeship.
???? If they don’t get that support from you, they will go elsewhere. ????
If you are an employee who thinks they would benefit from an apprenticeship at your current company, or have someone in your team who would be interested in getting a qualification, do get in contact!
