Despite only having started up in 2021, Pebble Biotechnology Labs has already supported several academic placements and an apprenticeship through Manchester Metropolitan University. As a small company, Pebble is able to provide apprentices with the proper time and care they need - creating an extensive training programme for learners. Supported by an interdisciplinary group of mentors, apprentices are given their own projects to take the lead on - giving them meaningful opportunities to develop ideas and put them into practice. Pebble also gives apprentices experience in all parts of the company, to help them build multifaceted skill sets.
Corban Bowers joined Pebble in November of 2022 with no experience of the biotech industry - but quickly adapted to develop a wide range of skills. Corban has been able to understand various areas of the business - working on a range of projects, including his own independent project - and has built his understanding to the point of being able to present to visitors to the lab, and even train new employees. Corban’s ever-growing skillset, keen observation and exemplary work ethic make him an invaluable asset to the team at Pebble.
Manchester Metropolitan University won Training Provider of the Year with more than 2,300 apprentices enrolled on a wide variety of courses, working with more than 540 employers. Manchester Met is committed to apprenticeships as a way of offering people innovative routes into higher education, and of meeting the needs of employers on a local and national scale. With a dedicated apprenticeships unit, Manchester Met provides learners and employers with outstanding support - helping with recruitment, on-boarding and progress tracking, and working with employer advisory boards to design and deliver the best courses possible.
Corban is a first year apprentice on the Laboratory Scientist Bioscience Degree Apprenticeship which launched in September 2022. The programme will be running again in September 2023, more information can be found on the Manchester Met website:
