BioCity Group is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial person to lead its company creation and accelerator programme activities at Alderley Park, Cheshire. BioCity was first established in Nottingham in 2003. It was one of the first incubators offering laboratories alongside business support to early stage companies in the life science sector. Since then, the BioCity Group has grown to include locations in Cheshire, Scotland and Nottingham and has launched MediCity in Nottingham and now Scotland.

BioCity and MediCity now house over 250 companies. There is a 91% survival rate over 13 years of companies at BioCity Nottingham. BioCity Group has created a suite of accelerator programmes and activities to ensure the ongoing creation and success of companies in the sector.

Accelerator Programmes
The BioCity Group Accelerator is made up of 3 areas of activity namely; Spark, Develop and Launch. It is designed to help drive companies from earliest stage to rapid growth. The goal of the programmes is to increase the number and quality of start-ups being created in the sector.

Candidate Profile
In addition to the attributes described in the job description below the successful candidate(s) will likely have a strong academic background and professional experience in some, if not all of, the following areas: start-ups, business coaching, management consultancy, early stage investment management, corporate innovation and in-licencing and accelerator programmes and in some, if not all of, the following sectors: healthcare, med tech, biotech and/or pharmaceuticals.

To deliver an ongoing programme to help constantly create, develop and launch high quality, investible start-up companies in the areas of biotech/medtech/ healthcare.

The Role
You lead the accelerator programme and other venture building activities at the BioHub, Alderley Park. By working closely with the Acceleration Managers and coaches across BioCity Group you will also ensure all programme activities and content are consistent with those at other sites.

By working closely with Incubator Manager at the BioHub you will also play a role in the promotion and growth of the site.

By working with the Investment team you will use the understanding of the early stage companies on the programmes to support the investment process.

You will also benefit from the experience and support infrastructure of the BioCity Group.

However, you will have primary responsibility for:

• Marketing and promotion to ensure the recruitment of participants to the programmes of the requisite number and quality, working closely with the Incubator Manager
• Building strong relationships with sources of start-up opportunities such as universities, NHS, research institutes, business schools etc
• The delivery of all programmes at the BioHub, Alderley Park i.e.
Spark – Establish a targeted annual events programme with a focus on innovation in biotech/pharma/medtech/healthcare, including short Bootcamps and other events
Develop – Run 2 Develop programmes per year with 6-10 participant businesses
Launch – Run in conjunction with the other sites a Launch programme delivered 1-to- 1 basis with the companies.
• Recruitment and management of coaches to provide full time or ad hoc support to opportunities on the start-up programmes
• The coaching of and instruction in the use of Business Model Canvas, Value Proposition Canvas and Lean Start-up methodologies
• Working weekly on a 1-to-1 basis with participants on DEVELOP to help them develop their technology, product, team and business plan
• Working with the BioCity Expert Network Manager to source key experts, senior figures and experienced entrepreneurs to provide the challenge, connections and inspiration they need
• The ongoing evolution of the content and delivery of the different programmes, working with Business Accelerator Managers at other sites
• Ensuring consistency of programme content and delivery with those at the other sites
• Staying up to date with latest start-up tools and techniques from all sectors and geographies
• Liaising with other BioCity Group coaches to share best practice, content development and coaching techniques and provide best possible support to participant companies
• Monitoring and reporting for the financial and key performance indicators of the programmes and ensuring any requirements of any public sector funding are met
• Working on a 1 to1 basis with companies on LAUNCH to help them become ‘investment ready’, ‘pitch ready’ and successfully raise finance.
• Working closely with the Investment team to ensure the programme delivers an ongoing pipeline of high quality investment opportunities
• Working closely with the Incubator Manager to ensure new companies are suitably housed and existing companies suitably supported

Skills, experience & personal attributes

• Ideally, a higher level qualification in a life sciences subject and a business qualification
• A passion for helping entrepreneurs succeed
• Confident and convincing presentation skills
• Understanding of starting a business and of the requirements of early stage investors
• Developing knowledge of business start-up tools such as Value Proposition Canvas, Lean Start-up assumption testing and other ‘evidence based’ entrepreneurship tools
• Experience of using other established business coaching and consultancy tools
• Developing knowledge of accelerator programmes
• Developing knowledge of, the healthcare, med tech, diagnostics sectors or the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors
• Ability to assess early stage business opportunities
• Ability to communicate effectively with entrepreneurs and start up team
• Credibility and communications skills required to engage with a range of partner organisations to involve them in the programmes
• An understanding of and interest in personal coaching and behavioural change
• Strong process and project management skills


Competitive salary based on experience plus 5% employer pension contribution, death-in-service benefits and the opportunity to participate in the BioCity Group Share Option Scheme (all after successful completion of probationary period). Twenty-five days annual holiday plus bank holidays.
