The Henry Royce Institute is the UK’s national centre for advanced materials research, innovation and commercialisation. The Royce works collaboratively with industry and academia to accelerate the innovation of materials systems in order to create economic and societal benefit. With its hub at the University of Manchester, the Institute has spokes at eight partner institutions: the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, and the UK Atomic Energy Authority and National Nuclear Laboratory. The £235m institute will allow the UK to grow its world-leading research and innovation base in Advanced Materials science.

Based at Manchester, you will work closely with the academic Core Area Champions and will have direct responsibility for leading business engagement activities covering your assigned research core areas. You will work as part of an integrated team across Royce Partners to proactively identify and drive the commercial exploitation of materials research. You will play a crucial role in driving activities including establishing and coordinating national core area community networks, and identifying and delivering Royce facilities access models.

The University of Manchester is supporting the Royce in attracting the best possible talent to maintain a stable and secure business development team into the future. The posts will be attached to the University’s Business Engagement & Knowledge Exchange Team and seconded out to the Royce. During this period, line management will be through the Royce’s Head of Business Engagement. The two teams will work closely to ensure sharing of best practice, strategy and training.

You will have excellent leadership skills, being a self-starter, with demonstrable experience of driving successful business engagement activities delivering value to industry. You will be able to move confidently between industry and academic settings to successfully drive a robust pipeline of activities. You will be comfortable working to targets and flexible to ensure proposals are delivered to short deadlines. The role requires good customer relationship skills which continue into delivery. A strong scientific or engineering background with knowledge of Advanced Materials research is required.
