£30 million cancer research institute proposed for Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, is currently raising funds to establish a world leading cancer trials and research centre on the site of the Freeman Hospital, adjacent to the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. The Sir Bobby Robson Institute will expand access to cancer trials for a northern regional population of 3.5 million people by 50% and accelerate research progress globally.
This campaign offers a meaningful and tangible opportunity for organisations committed to patient impact, innovation, and supporting the communities in which they operate to contribute to their mission through charitable and CSR support. Building essential research infrastructure will enhance cancer trial capacity, and bring cutting-edge treatments closer to the people who need them. The Institute will also bring the NHS , academia, industry and the charity sector together in a unique way.
Over two-thirds of the £30m target has now been secured thanks to a lead gift from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. A crucial phase of the campaign is now approaching with planning permission due later in December and construction due to start in April 2026.
